Words: They sound a whole lot better when Brad Pitt is saying them. Chanel has been dangling the news that Pitt is the new face of their iconic fragrance, Chanel No. 5 for a few weeks. Short clips were released here and there, giving us tiny glimpses of him to tide us over until the big reveal. Details of the contract, awarding him $7 million for the campaign, only served to increase press attention and audience expectations. On Monday, we were finally able to view the entire ad:
Pitt stands with his hands in his pockets, waxing philosophical straight to the camera for 30 seconds. And then it’s done, and you’re left feeling unsatisfied and disappointed. Don’t get me wrong- I love me some Brad Pitt. He was amazing in Thelma & Louise, Fight Club, and Inglourious Basterds to name a few, and it’s been great to watch him have a relationship with Gwyneth Paltrow, then Jennifer Aniston, then with Angelina Jolie, and then with all those kids… I just don’t feel particularly strongly about the scent when I view the ad, and I certainly don’t feel compelled to buy a bottle. Perhaps this is a case of over-promising and under-delivering from the famous fashion house.
